There is something wonderfully English about an object that appears quite composed until you look at it properly.
Founded in Britain in 1988 by Andrew and Sarah Hills, Porta Romana began in a small workshop and developed a distinctive approach to lighting in which artistry, material and
craftsmanship are inseparable from function.
From its earliest years, the company's painting
studio has been central to that philosophy. Finishes are developed by hand through layers of
colour and patination, while individual pieces are handcrafted and hand-finished by specialist
makers.
Porta Romana describes its ambition simply: to create objects capable of being loved for a lifetime.
This lamp has made a respectable start.
Its pale ceramic body is transformed by hand-painted linework into an imaginary birdcage. Fine
charcoal ribs follow the curved shoulders of the vessel; small ochre details articulate its structure,
while restrained green leaves punctuate its edges.
At the centre, two fantastical long-tailed birds cross one another upon a suspended oval swing,
painted in turquoise, faded mauve and blue.
The effect is a charming form of trompe-l’œil. The ceramic has not disappeared, nor is the
illusion intended to deceive completely. Instead, the painter asks us to participate in the fiction.
Above it sits a broad oval silk shade in deep espresso brown.
That shade matters.
Its visual weight prevents the composition from becoming overly sweet. From across the room
the lamp appears restrained, almost architectural. Only on approach do the birds reveal themselves.
The lamp has remained in a private collection since its original purchase. Its surviving Porta
Romana manufacturer's label carries a handwritten reference appearing to read 12/9/06.

A horizon is one of the simplest divisions a painter can make.
Above.
Below.
Light.
Dark.
And then the trouble begins.
These four small oil paintings by Dutch-Canadian artist Jeroen Witvliet reduce the landscape to something approaching its most elemental condition. A pale atmospheric field hovers above a dense expanse of near-black. Between them lies a horizon that is neither entirely stable nor entirely certain.
Across the surfaces, extraordinarily fine vertical lines interrupt the horizontal weight of the compositions. They appear almost incidental at first—marks, divisions, perhaps traces of structure—but their repetition prevents the paintings from settling comfortably into landscape.
Nothing is quite still.
Each canvas measures only twelve inches square, yet no two resolve the proposition in precisely the same way. The darkness rises and recedes. Light expands, contracts and becomes stained at its edges. Horizons shift. Vertical marks migrate.
The four works begin to feel less like repetitions than successive thoughts.

There is something wonderfully English about an object that appears quite composed until you look at it properly.
Founded in Britain in 1988 by Andrew and Sarah Hills, Porta Romana began in a small workshop and developed a distinctive approach to lighting in which artistry, material and
craftsmanship are inseparable from function.
From its earliest years, the company's painting
studio has been central to that philosophy. Finishes are developed by hand through layers of
colour and patination, while individual pieces are handcrafted and hand-finished by specialist
makers.
Porta Romana describes its ambition simply: to create objects capable of being loved for a lifetime.
This lamp has made a respectable start.
Its pale ceramic body is transformed by hand-painted linework into an imaginary birdcage. Fine
charcoal ribs follow the curved shoulders of the vessel; small ochre details articulate its structure,
while restrained green leaves punctuate its edges.
At the centre, two fantastical long-tailed birds cross one another upon a suspended oval swing,
painted in turquoise, faded mauve and blue.
The effect is a charming form of trompe-l’œil. The ceramic has not disappeared, nor is the
illusion intended to deceive completely. Instead, the painter asks us to participate in the fiction.
Above it sits a broad oval silk shade in deep espresso brown.
That shade matters.
Its visual weight prevents the composition from becoming overly sweet. From across the room
the lamp appears restrained, almost architectural. Only on approach do the birds reveal themselves.
The lamp has remained in a private collection since its original purchase. Its surviving Porta
Romana manufacturer's label carries a handwritten reference appearing to read 12/9/06.

A horizon is one of the simplest divisions a painter can make.
Above.
Below.
Light.
Dark.
And then the trouble begins.
These four small oil paintings by Dutch-Canadian artist Jeroen Witvliet reduce the landscape to something approaching its most elemental condition. A pale atmospheric field hovers above a dense expanse of near-black. Between them lies a horizon that is neither entirely stable nor entirely certain.
Across the surfaces, extraordinarily fine vertical lines interrupt the horizontal weight of the compositions. They appear almost incidental at first—marks, divisions, perhaps traces of structure—but their repetition prevents the paintings from settling comfortably into landscape.
Nothing is quite still.
Each canvas measures only twelve inches square, yet no two resolve the proposition in precisely the same way. The darkness rises and recedes. Light expands, contracts and becomes stained at its edges. Horizons shift. Vertical marks migrate.
The four works begin to feel less like repetitions than successive thoughts.

There is something wonderfully English about an object that appears quite composed until you look at it properly.
Founded in Britain in 1988 by Andrew and Sarah Hills, Porta Romana began in a small workshop and developed a distinctive approach to lighting in which artistry, material and
craftsmanship are inseparable from function.
From its earliest years, the company's painting
studio has been central to that philosophy. Finishes are developed by hand through layers of
colour and patination, while individual pieces are handcrafted and hand-finished by specialist
makers.
Porta Romana describes its ambition simply: to create objects capable of being loved for a lifetime.
This lamp has made a respectable start.
Its pale ceramic body is transformed by hand-painted linework into an imaginary birdcage. Fine
charcoal ribs follow the curved shoulders of the vessel; small ochre details articulate its structure,
while restrained green leaves punctuate its edges.
At the centre, two fantastical long-tailed birds cross one another upon a suspended oval swing,
painted in turquoise, faded mauve and blue.
The effect is a charming form of trompe-l’œil. The ceramic has not disappeared, nor is the
illusion intended to deceive completely. Instead, the painter asks us to participate in the fiction.
Above it sits a broad oval silk shade in deep espresso brown.
That shade matters.
Its visual weight prevents the composition from becoming overly sweet. From across the room
the lamp appears restrained, almost architectural. Only on approach do the birds reveal themselves.
The lamp has remained in a private collection since its original purchase. Its surviving Porta
Romana manufacturer's label carries a handwritten reference appearing to read 12/9/06.

A horizon is one of the simplest divisions a painter can make.
Above.
Below.
Light.
Dark.
And then the trouble begins.
These four small oil paintings by Dutch-Canadian artist Jeroen Witvliet reduce the landscape to something approaching its most elemental condition. A pale atmospheric field hovers above a dense expanse of near-black. Between them lies a horizon that is neither entirely stable nor entirely certain.
Across the surfaces, extraordinarily fine vertical lines interrupt the horizontal weight of the compositions. They appear almost incidental at first—marks, divisions, perhaps traces of structure—but their repetition prevents the paintings from settling comfortably into landscape.
Nothing is quite still.
Each canvas measures only twelve inches square, yet no two resolve the proposition in precisely the same way. The darkness rises and recedes. Light expands, contracts and becomes stained at its edges. Horizons shift. Vertical marks migrate.
The four works begin to feel less like repetitions than successive thoughts.

There is something wonderfully English about an object that appears quite composed until you
look at it properly.
Founded in Britain in 1988 by Andrew and Sarah Hills, Porta Romana began in a small workshop and developed a distinctive approach to lighting in which artistry, material and
craftsmanship are inseparable from function.
From its earliest years, the company's painting
studio has been central to that philosophy. Finishes are developed by hand through layers of
colour and patination, while individual pieces are handcrafted and hand-finished by specialist
makers.
Porta Romana describes its ambition simply: to create objects capable of being loved for a lifetime.
This lamp has made a respectable start.
Its pale ceramic body is transformed by hand-painted linework into an imaginary birdcage. Fine
charcoal ribs follow the curved shoulders of the vessel; small ochre details articulate its structure,
while restrained green leaves punctuate its edges.
At the centre, two fantastical long-tailed birds cross one another upon a suspended oval swing,
painted in turquoise, faded mauve and blue.
The effect is a charming form of trompe-l’œil. The ceramic has not disappeared, nor is the
illusion intended to deceive completely. Instead, the painter asks us to participate in the fiction.
Above it sits a broad oval silk shade in deep espresso brown.
That shade matters.
Its visual weight prevents the composition from becoming overly sweet. From across the room
the lamp appears restrained, almost architectural. Only on approach do the birds reveal
themselves.
It waits.
The lamp has remained in a private collection since its original purchase. Its surviving Porta
Romana manufacturer's label carries a handwritten reference appearing to read 12/9/06.

And then the trouble begins.
These four small oil paintings by Dutch-Canadian artist Jeroen Witvliet reduce the landscape to something approaching its most elemental condition. A pale atmospheric field hovers above a dense expanse of near-black. Between them lies a horizon that is neither entirely stable nor entirely certain.
Across the surfaces, extraordinarily fine vertical lines interrupt the horizontal weight of the compositions. They appear almost incidental at first—marks, divisions, perhaps traces of structure—but their repetition prevents the paintings from settling comfortably into landscape.
Nothing is quite still.
Each canvas measures only twelve inches square, yet no two resolve the proposition in precisely the same way. The darkness rises and recedes. Light expands, contracts and becomes stained at its edges. Horizons shift. Vertical marks migrate.
