The Colour of Autumn
The Autumn Retreat

FORGED BY FIRE
THE FIRST FIRE
Outside, the architecture remains unchanged. The season arrives through temperature, landscape and light.
Stone cools. Greens become quieter. Charcoal and ash settle against copper leaves and a lowering sun.
And as daylight disappears, the fireplace becomes the first source of manufactured warmth.

Autumn colour is rarely one colour.
It deepens where light passes through it.
Amber becomes tobacco. Green retreats toward fern. Clear glass gathers smoke at its edges.
The changing relationship between colour, material and light.

FOLLOWING AUTUMN INDOORS

Inside, the palette becomes quieter.

COME CLOSER
Across a room, we see colour.
Closer, we begin to see construction: the depth of a velvet pile, an irregular thread, several colours woven together to create what first appeared to be one.
Sometimes the most luxurious detail in a room is the one that takes a moment to discover.
Colour becomes considerably more interesting when it acquires a surface.
Sandstone. Belgian linen. Tobacco. Dark wood. Aged brass.

Rather than introducing obvious autumn colour, we allowed the changing light outside to alter materials already within the house. Linen becomes parchment. Walnut deepens. Brass catches the last warmth of the day.
The season changes. The architecture remains.

MATERIAL MATTERS
Beneath the seasonal palette is the permanent vocabulary of the house: warm mineral plaster, sandstone, walnut, honed stone, forged iron, aged brass, Belgian linen and cognac mohair.
These materials do not belong to autumn.
They simply behave differently in autumn light.

DARKNESS WITHOUT BLACK
For the Library, we chose Benjamin Moore Wenge AF-180, a deep chocolate brown with subtle black and violet undertones.
Paint colours have a Light Reflectance Value, or LRV—a simple measure of how much light a colour reflects back into a room. Wenge reflects very little.
Instead, it seems to hold the light.

A CLOSER LOOK — CUSTOM MILLWORK
Dark walnut cabinetry gives the Library much of its warmth and architectural character. The custom shelving was designed around the room's collection of books and objects, allowing the millwork to feel integrated rather than added afterward.
By evening, the brown retreats toward near-black while firelight, walnut and aged brass come forward.
A colour that changes as the light leaves the room.
